Between 1820 and 1830, women began joining the movement for equality while fighting against slavery, and in 1840, the abolitionist movement split into two groups: one for women's rights and one against it.
In 1844, the Female Labor Reform Association was created in New England.
The first women's rights convention was held at Seneca Falls, New York in 1848; 300 people attended, including 40 men. New York also passed the first Married Woman's Property Act, anesthesia was used during childbirth for the first time, and the Free Soil Party was formed as well.
More conventions were held in the North and West during the 1850's, but it wasn't until after the Civil War that they began being held in the South.
Former slave Isabella van Wagener included women's rights into her cause in 1850, and a year later she gave her famous "Ain't I a Woman?" speech at Ohio Women's Rights Convention.
In 1869, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton founded the Nation Woman Suffrage Association in order to win the right to vote for women.
Colorado becomes the first state to grant women the right to vote in 1893, and in 1896, Utah and Idaho follow.
The 19th Amendment was ratified on August 21, 1920.
